Just east of Amsterdam lies Lake Markermeer and an area literally named “Waterland”. This great expanse of water still has a maritime feel to it although it was cut off from the North Sea in 1932. Popular with surfers, sailors and bird watchers, the lake takes the centre stage in our popular cycling holiday which starts and finishes in Amsterdam. Cycling all the way around the lake, you will find yourself captivated by charming historical towns, informative museums of cultural history and ever-changing land- and waterscapes. Visit quaint fishing village Volendam where old ladies still wear traditional clothing; and let the unique landscape of “Waterland” blow you away.
Your first night is in a quality hotel in Huizen.

Today you will cycle through the villages Volendam and Monnickendam along Lake Markermeer. The beautiful old Dutch stone houses in the distinctive heart of the catholic fishing village Volendam seem to have been drawn up without an organised street plan. “De Dijk”, overlooking the harbour, attracts many tourists who browse the souvenir shops and have a break at a pavement cafe or restaurant.
